Workshop Overview

This 2-day intensive workshop is designed for educators of young children (ages 3–8) working with multilingual learners in mainstream classrooms. Participants will engage with key principles of early language development, explore the stages of multilingualism, and apply strategies that connect theory to everyday classroom practices.

This workshop blends research-based frameworks with actionable strategies for scaffolding instruction, fostering collaboration, engaging families, and building inclusive learning environments where multilingual learners thrive.

You’ll gain fresh insights into how young children acquire language—and walk away with proven, practical strategies to create a classroom where every child feels seen, supported, and empowered.

Workshop Focus Areas

This workshop addresses a critical need in early childhood education by equipping Pre-K to Grade 2 educators with both theoretical foundations and practical strategies to support multilingual learners in mainstream classrooms.

Within culturally and linguistically diverse classroom communities, educators require an understanding of the language acquisition process and the unique characteristics of multilingual learners in the early years.

What You Will Learn

in 2 Days (5.5 hours each day), structured into 3 sessions per day (2 hrs | 2 hrs | 1.5 hrs).

Day 1 :
Session 1: Foundations of Multilingual Development
Bust myths about multilingualism in young children.

Session 2: Understanding Your Learners
Apply observational tools and language history interviews.

Session 3: Scaffolding for Success

Day 2:
Session 1: Language-Rich Instruction
Deep dive into teaching vocabulary using a powerful 5-step protocol.
Learn to use cooperative learning to build expressive and receptive language.
Session 2: Advocating and Collaborating
Strategies to engage multilingual families and advocate for their children.
Fostering collaboration in inclusive learning environments.
Session 3: Early Literacy & Future Steps
Support early reading and writing with linguistically-responsive strategies.
Reflective discussions and planning for immediate classroom application.

Methodology

Rooted in an asset-based framework, this workshop emphasizes inclusive instructional practices that draw upon students’ home languages, cultural backgrounds, and prior knowledge as essential resources for learning. Key tools and frameworks from WIDA, TESOL and Stanford will be explored.

Alexandra Gustad is a seasoned international educator, instructional coach, and EAL coordinator with over 20 years of PreK–12 experience.
Holding advanced degrees in Anthropology, Cultural Studies, and Education, along with certifications in TESOL, WIDA, and Cognitive Coaching, she specializes in multilingual learner pedagogy, early language development, and inclusive teaching practices.
Her asset-based approach supports culturally responsive, language-rich classrooms. Alexandra has led professional learning globally and published on topics such as English language learning, AI in education, translanguaging, and leadership.

Individual: USD 650 per participant
Group of 3: USD 1785 per group (USD 595 per person)

FAQ

Will I get certificate of participation?
Yes we will provide soft copy of certificate of participation for completing 11 hours of professional development hours.
Will I get a chance to network with other educators?
Yes we have scheduled a main coffee break of 30 minutes and lunch break of 60 minutes for networking time with other international school educators. Also, we have online Padlet, where you will be able to connect with fellow participants.
If I cannot attend the workshop. Will you offer me a refund?
If you are unable to attend the workshop, you can transfer your registration to another colleague.  The fee will not be refunded.  
What if the workshop is cancelled by the organiser (KSIPD)?
If the workshop is canceled by the organizer (KSIPD) due to lack of participants or any other unforeseen reason, the workshop fee will be refunded.
