Overview of this workshop

Acclaimed educational researcher, Dr. Robert Marzano, has concluded that a “guaranteed and viable curriculum” is the most significant factor at the school level influencing student learning and achievement.

Understanding by Design (UBD)® is a world renowned framework for building such a curriculum. UBD places a special emphasis on teaching for understanding and transfer as well as including performance-based assessments to gauge student understanding and assess their ability to apply their learning.

This workshop will explore the key ideas of UBD and should be of interest to all educators.

What participants will inquire into in each session

Session 1 – The Logic of Backward Design
This session will explore the logic of “backward” design and its application to curriculum
planning. We’ll review sample curriculum units from a variety of subjects and grades and
examine a set of Design Standards that identify the qualities of effective curriculum designs.
Finally, we’ll preview a vast collection of supportive resources.
Session 2 – Identifying Desired Results
This session will examine three inter-related goals for learning and consider their implications for teaching and assessment. We’ll explore a practical process for using these goal types to “unpack” standards. We’ll learn ways of identifying the “big ideas” that are most important for learners to understand, and how to formulate associative Essential Questions. We’ll also preview ways in which artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, can assist teachers in unit design.
Session 3 – Determining Assessment Evidence
Session three will address the topic of assessment and explore various ways of gathering
evidence of student learning and performance. We’ll focus specifically on the design and use of authentic, performance-based assessments to provide evidence of students’ understanding and ability to apply their learning. A variety of practical and proven design tools will be shared. We’ll also explore ways to use artificial intelligence AI tools to assist with design of assessment tasks
Session 4 – Teaching for Understanding
This final session will focus on the question: What kinds of instruction and learning experiences will help students learn deeply? We’ll explore how “deep” learning occurs and examine a set of proven instructional strategies and associated tools to help students make meaning, build deep understanding, and transfer their learning from school into the wider world.
